Looking for details and CAD drawings for StonePly attachment methods? Here is a quick guide.

Here are some typical details for StonePly. You can download the drawings here as either as pdf or dwg format.

Detailing stone used to be really hard. It was heavy, fragile, difficult to attach and hard to support and install. StonePly changed all of that. And since StonePly makes natural stone lighter, stronger and simpler to attach, there are hundreds of ways to use StonePly in your designs.

If you don’t find what you are looking for here or if you have a question about detailing, please contact us. We are here to help.

Z Clips and Adjustable Angles

If you are detailing a façade wall, the Z clip system with adjustable angles is our most popular option. Similar to the Z clip system, the adjustable angles allow for the depth of the cavity to be adjusted to allow for variations in the wall, allow for insulation and allow the stone façade to be hung straight and true. An angle is attached to the wall, the second angle is plumbed and leveled and then attaches to the first. The Z clips attach to the face of the angle.

Z Clip Attachment System

The most popular method of attachment is the Z clip. For exterior cladding, the wall is waterproofed. Z clips are then attached to the wall with stainless steel screws. The StonePly panels have Z clips mounted to them and the panels are hung by the interlocking Z clips. If the wall is uneven, adjustable angles and Z clips are recommended.

Anchor Plate Attachment System

The anchor plate attachment system is a screw attachment. It uses metal tabs at the perimeter of the StonePly and screws through the tabs at the joints. Stud spacing should align with the vertical joints and metal straps can be used horizontally to provide a substrate for the screws to attach to. Alternatively, a plywood sheathing can be used as a substrate.

Panelized Steel Stud Attachment System

The pre-panelized steel stud or strong back system is a prefabricated metal frame that the StonePly panels attach to. The framed panels can then be hoisted into place and erected as larger wall panels. This is sometimes referred to as a strong back frame.

Prepanelized Steel Stud Attachment

Adhesive Attachment System Over Gypsum (Interior)

For interior applications, StonePly can be attached by adhesive. Adhesive options include construction adhesives like PL Premium. A clean gypsum board wall is the substrate. Adhesive is applied to the backs of the panels in walnut sized dabs at 16” spacing. The panels are then pressed into place. Spacers are used to maintain the joint spacing.

Adhesive Attachment Over Gypsum

Adhesive Attachment Over Steel Stud

Similar to the adhesive attachment over gypsum board, this method allows you to attach directly to steel studs with adhesive.

Attachment System on Furring Over Masonry

For panels over masonry walls, hat channels allow for trueing up the wall and providing a flat and true surface to attach the StonePly.

StonePly specializes in beautiful stone facades. Great stone facades that dress some of the finest buildings in the world. Clean, classic, beautiful, strong and easy to design and install. Expert stone consultant Ashley McDermott shares a few secrets to getting a great looking stone façade for your project.

THE STONE SELECTION

“Designers have a mental image of the stone look they want, but actually describing it is another story. And sometimes they won’t know it until they see it. A good stone façade provider is going to listen, interpret what you’re asking for and provide samples and suggestions. We help with finding the best stone, finish, attachment and detailing that works with the actual building you are designing.

StonePly offers the world’s largest selection of natural stone on honeycomb backing, and that makes the process of finding “the perfect stone” easier. We have stone from quarries all over the world, including some stones that are exclusive only to StonePly. Our goal is to help you find the ideal balance of a stone that is flattering to your particular design, durable and cost effective. If you have a particular stone in mind, we can start the process there. Providing a picture of a stone you like is a huge help too.”

THE ATTACHMENT

“StonePly makes stone panel attachment easier, stronger and safer. With the StonePly system, there are options in stone panel attachment and we like to show designers those choices and help them select the one that is best for the façade of their particular project. Do they need insulation behind the stone panels? Do they want a hurricane resistant stone cladding? Will it be an open joint rain screen cladding or a sealed joint system? Or does your project have a really unusual condition that needs a custom attachment method? We help you work through all that.”

THE SURFACE FINISH

“The surface finish of the stone can make a huge difference in the appearance of the stone. Your options for stone surface finishes used to be limited to just polished or honed. Now there is sandblasted, flamed, waterjet and a host of other stone finishes available. You want a supplier who can offer you all of those finish options and who will work with you to find the best finish for your stone panel project. StonePly can do that and we are here to help.”

Choosing the right stone is about appearance, durability, finish and maintenance. Here are the five points to get right when designing, specifying or buying stone cladding.

THE COLOR

Stones run the gamut from light to dark and all colors in between. Keep in mind that dark stones can get very hot to the touch in full sun. In areas where people can touch the stone, a black or dark brown stone may not be a good choice.

White Carrara

Impala Black

SURFACE FINISH

How a stone appears depends upon color, pattern and reflectivity. Color is made up of reflected light and the texture of the stone’s surface affects that. Polished stones tend to be darker, while sandblasted or flamed stones appear lighter. A black granite may appear deep black when polished, light gray when honed and an even paler shade of gray when flamed. When selecting cladding stones, make sure you see both the stone and the finish before you decide.

Polished Granite

PATTERN

Some stone a homogeneous in pattern. Others have a strong pattern or veining. When installed, the pattern should all run the same direction. Make sure to get this one right, or you could wind up with a hodgepodge of a pattern.

DON’T CRACK UP

When designing a façade, keep in mind that ordinary slabs can shatter and fall in a high wind, seismic or hail condition. StonePly features an aluminum honeycomb backing that is bonded to every square inch of the stone. It’s hurricane proof, large missile impact resistant and earthquake resistant.

Even in hurricanes, even in earthquakes.

HAVE A STRONG ATTACHMENT

The cladding panel should be permanently bonded to an aluminum honeycomb and fastened to the structure. Unlike ordinary slab connections that are only at the edges, StonePly connections are fast, super secure and engineered to last.

Aluminum Honeycomb Backing

Now that you know what to look for and design for in stone cladding project, here are a few projects to look at.

A Guide for Selection, Design, and Installation of Reinforced Travertine for Cladding, Curtain Wall, Elevators and Wall Panels

Travertines are one of the more popular stones for cladding applications. The pitted and layered appearance has been attractive to designers and architects since ancient times. Travertines have a stratified appearance as they are formed by the overlapping of horizontal stone layers. The stone has a number of small holes more or less parallel to the direction of the bedding layers. Travertine is prized as a wall cladding for its undulating layered pattern of bedding and its natural voids. The layered appearance is accentuated by the pitting which varies in size and frequency. Italy is source for the best known varieties of travertine, but travertines are also quarried in Mexico, Turkey and elsewhere around the world.

Italian White Travertine or Travertine Bianco is the primary white travertine quarried in Italy. Due to the small number of quarrying areas and their limited production, the availability of white travertine varieties for exterior or interior cladding projects can be fairly limited. Thanks to the efficiency of the StonePly process, more cladding can be produced with less stone and that helps ensure an adequate supply of travertine for any sized project. Other travertines include Silver, Walnut, Golden and Roman.

Travertino Romano Travertine (Beige Travertine)

Quarry blocks from the travertine quarries are generally medium-sized. From these blocks StonePly panels are produced as 4′ by 8′ panels or in sizes custom produced for your application. The travertine face of the StonePly panels is typically 1/4″ thick with a backing of either 1/2″ or 3/4″ aluminum honeycomb. The panel weight is around 3.4 lbs per sq ft. For some special applications a fiberglass backing or an aluminum composite backing can be used. The StonePly travertine on aluminum honeycomb cladding panels offer 60 times the impact strength of ordinary travertine, are able to resist hurricane force winds, large missile impact testing and seismic racking.

Applications

Travertine StonePly panels are suitable for cladding and wall panels for both interiors and exteriors. Despite the pitting, travertine is surprisingly resistant to freeze thaw and StonePly’s travertine cladding panels are suitable for use in freezing weather and appropriate for all climates. Ordinary travertine panels are porous to water and, when used as a cladding, they can leak rain into the wall cavity. StonePly travertine panels have a solid sheet of aluminum behind them that makes them impervious to the passage of moisture.

The surface of travertine wall panels and cladding is generally either polished or honed. When used as a flooring, travertine should be filled to avoid dirt collecting in the voids. This can be done at the factory and involves filling the voids with a resin and stone powder or a cementitious stone filler.

Testing and Standards for Travertine Panels

StonePly travertine panels are tested to various standards including UL, ASTM standards and ICC/IRC or IBC (International Building Code) standards. Testing has also been done to confirm compliance with the International Residential Code and International Fire Code standards.

StonePly also offers extensive testing data to Canadian standards. For our European clients, StonePly offers testing to UK (BS), Italian, European Standards and other testing standards. Engineering is available for the panels and their attachments for cladding, curtain wall or other applications.

Some of the ASTM standards and specifications that apply to travertine cladding include:

ASTM 330-02 Standard Test Method for Structural Performance of Curtain Walls

ASTM E1996-05B Specifications for Performance of Impact Protective Systems Impacted by Windborne Debris in Hurricanes

ASTM C1527 / C1527M-11Standard Specification for Travertine Dimension Stone

ASTM C97/C97M Test Methods for Absorption and Bulk Specific Gravity of Dimension Stone

ASTM C99/C99M Test Method for Modulus of Rupture of Dimension Stone
ASTM C119 Terminology Relating to Dimension Stone
ASTM C170/C170M Test Method for Compressive Strength of Dimension Stone
ASTM C241/C241M Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Stone Subjected to Foot Traffic
ASTM C1528 Guide for Selection of Dimension Stone

Large Missile Impact Testing: Large missile impact tests involve firing a weighted 2 X 4 at the stone cladding panel. The test simulates the impact of large windborne debris, such as wood framing, tree limbs, posts and other large objects. The test involves impact followed by severe pressure cycling. The StonePly panel passed, while the ordinary stone slab control was broken and failed.

Small Missile Impact Testing: The small missile impact test simulates smaller wind-borne debris, such as hail or roof gravel. The cladding panel must resist windborne debris followed by severe pressure cycling.

Testing information is available here.

In architectural specifications, StonePly Travertine Cladding may be specified under:

SECTION 07420 NATURAL STONE REINFORCED PANELS (EXTERIOR)

SECTION 09452 NATURAL STONE REINFORCED PANELS (INTERIOR)

These specifications are available here.

The Largest Stone Clad building in the Caribbean meets the challenges of fast track schedule and hurricane proof construction

The Cove, a $1 billion expansion to Atlantis, includes resort hotels, restaurants, condos and retail. The upmarket resorts modern and refined architecture and simple architectural forms required cladding that was elegant, durable and beautiful. The owner and architects selected StonePly. Use of the natural stone faced StonePly panels allowed for sophisticated and refined detailing on the interior and exterior stonework.

To build the resort, the cladding faced several challenges:

The spectacular island location surrounded by tropical beaches limited site access and space.

The ocean front location required a cladding that could stand up to extreme hurricane force winds, salt spray and tropical sun.

The resorts fast track schedule allowed just 90 days from approval to quarry, cut, fabricate, ship and install 120,000 square feet of stone cladding.

Ease of installation. The Islands have a limited workforce and the cladding had to be able to be installed to an extremely high level of quality by average laborers without previous cladding experience.

The Challenges: Beauty, Hurricanes, Fast Schedule and Size

Did the building create any challenges during the erection of the stone? Nothing that couldn’t be solved by simple connection details and StonePly panels. “Due to the constraints of performance, time and budget we used StonePly,” sums up John Newbold, who was the contractors lead on the project, “StonePly let us meet the key challenges we faced. StonePly offered a much better choice than slab stone in terms of economics, schedule and strength.”

“Cladding a building the size of the Atlantis Cove in slab stone would have exceeded the capacity of any installer and the installation would have taken months. With StonePly the stone panels arrived on time and the installers did not need to be highly skilled stone setters, basic carpentry skills were all that was needed.”

Mock-ups Aid Designers

For the stone cladding, the designers selected a combination of a grooved finish with saw marks and a contrasting hammered finish. To ensure the designers got the look they wanted, StonePly first produced numerous stone samples for the architect to select from. Once a stone was selected, they proceeded to larger, full size samples. Once those were approved, StonePly created a full size mock-up of the panels to review color, texture and attachment details. “The mock up assured the team that StonePly could provide the look they all wanted,” Newbold said.

Simplified Connections

Structural support for the StonePly panels was much simpler than it would have been with slab stone cladding. “With slabs, we would have needed a complex support structure to carry the weight and to counter the brittle nature of slabs,” he notes. With StonePly, a lightweight aluminum frame was used with z clips to quickly fasten the panels.

Z Clip Attachment

StonePly Helps with Tight Site

With construction taking place on an island, space was limited. And since some of the work took place over the water, access was difficult. The use of StonePly minimized the construction time and the space required for installation. Several hundred square feet of the thin, lightweight panels fit on a pallet and the individual panels could be easily moved by hand. One or two men on a boom or a scaffold could install the panels. “A typical 4’ by 4’ slab that would have weighed 640 lbs. in slab stone weighed just 56 lbs. in StonePly. That translates into a huge difference in speed, logistics, space required, structural support and productivity.” Newbold said.

Panels Easily Pass Hurricane Testing

One of the early concerns with the project was the hurricane force winds that strike the islands on occasion. A series of tests were performed to verify the strength of the panels and connections.

Large Missile Impact StonePly panels were tested and easily passed the large missile impact test. This involved repeatedly firing a weighted 2” by 4” by 8’ board at the panels. When subjected to the same test, ordinary stone slabs would shatter.

Wind Suction The panels and connections were field tested for suction up to 4 times the hurricane force winds (the testing equipment limits). In the laboratory the panels were tested to 50 times hurricane loads.

Additional testing In addition, the panels passed rigorous testing for flexural strength, adhesive strength, UV exposure, expansion/contraction and impact. “They have been soaked in salt water, had a 2 by 4 fired at them, subjected to hurricane winds, been sprayed, bent, heated, beaten and crushed. They are probably the most tested stone panels ever made,” said Newbold.

Speed: A major benefit

To meet the time frame required by Kerzner, The Cove was built on a fast-track schedule, with construction beginning before the final design was complete. The StonePly production capacity was a key reason they were selected. With only 90 days from approvals to produce and install 120,000 square feet of stone cladding, schedule was a key concern. “Even with the fast track schedule, the resort opened on time. That would simply not have been possible with conventional stone slab cladding”.

StonePly panels at Atlantis Resort, Bahamas

Many clients prefer the look of natural, large stone panels for their interior walls. These types of panels offer a clean look with virtually no maintenance. Unfortunately, most traditional large format stone slabs pose significant challenges for contractors and builders. They tend to be heavy and hard to install, which can end up costing clients valuable time and money.

To put it in perspective, a traditional 4’ X 4’ stone cladding panel is 10 times heavier than StonePly’s aluminum composite material (ACM) panels. And Stoneply’s aluminum honeycomb panels are extremely thin, making them ideal for interior spaces.

Similarly, when anchoring traditional stone panels, each anchor must be drilled, mixed, filled, and the epoxy left to set overnight. Installing StonePly natural stone cladding panels is much simpler since the aluminum backing allows you to attach an anchor anywhere to the back using a screw gun. The simplicity of the installation makes for quick and easy changes on site, and without any epoxy left to dry, panels can be installed rain or shine.

StonePly offers affordable and practical solutions to the challenges of installing large size interior stone. Because StonePly’s natural stone panels are so incredibly light, they are easily attached to interior sheathed walls or existing walls made of brick, metal, concrete or stucco. This completely eliminates the need to remove existing wall material prior to installation. Unlike traditional stone panels, StonePly panels do not require the strength of a support wall in order to stand the test of time.

StonePly natural stone cladding panels are installed using one of three types of attachment methods: the z-clip method, the plate and screw method, and the adhesive attachment method.

Z-Clip System

StonePly panels installed at the Chipola College Center for the Arts

The z-clip attachment method safely and securely locks wall panels in place. For this method, a z-clip is attached to the back of the panel, and a z-molding is attached to the substrate. The panels can then be slid into place; the z-clip fitting inside the z-molding. Installation is finished by securing the panels with a structural silicone.

The z-clip attachment method combined with StonePly natural stone cladding panels allows for fast and easy installation and removal, and is an ideal solution for clients who seek a smooth, clean appearance.

A popular design choice for interior stone cladding is a z clad panel, and contractors and architects alike agree that StonePly outperforms the competition when it comes to installing z clad natural stone cladding.

StonePly’s z clad system is a natural stone cladding system using z-shaped panels that give straight walls and corners a seamless finish nearly impossible to detect. The z clad natural stone cladding system is popular for both contemporary and classic building designs, and is easily installed by contractors, mill workers, and carpenters.

Plate and Screw Method

The plate and screw attachment method is ideal for clients seeking the appearance of thicker and heavier slab stone. In this method, metal plates are extended from the backs of the natural stone panels. These plates enter the joints and are attached to the substrate with No. 8 screws. Backer rod and sealant are used to conceal any screws.

Since you can place screws anywhere on the back of StonePly’s aluminum backed panels, this attachment method is relatively simple for clients seeking the appearance of thicker and heavier slab stone, but with the same lightweight and shatter-resistant characteristics StonePly panels are known for.

Adhesive Method

StonePly panels are so light that they can even be installed securely with a structural silicone. This is known as the adhesive method. The panels easily adhere to most substrates and can even be used over most existing wall treatments.

Large Format Stone Slabs for Interior Floors

StonePly’s wide variety of large format stone slabs isn’t solely used for cladding walls. The company has perfected natural stone cladding for specialty floors offering a stunning, yet economical choice for any floor challenge.

And because StonePly offers the world’s largest selection of natural stone cladding options, including granites, marble, travertine and limestone, there really is no single design style that StonePly can’t accommodate. In fact, StonePly uses stone from all over the world in order to provide custom stone veneers to each individual customer.

The folks at StonePly have more than 25 years of experience creating and perfecting their natural stone cladding system. You can tap into their expertise and work with them one-on-one to get the exact stone application you are looking for.
