Thin sandstone veneer cladding from StonePly.

Sandstone faced StonePly veneer cladding is composed of an aluminum honeycomb base with a sandstone veneer permanently bonded to the face. Sandstone is a sedimentary stone, made up primarily of sand sized grains of minerals. The most common minerals in sandstone are quartz and feldspar. Sandstone veneer cladding panels are available in almost any color, the most common being red, brown, yellow, tan, pink, gray and white.

StonePly sandstone veneer cladding panels are generally used in a smooth sawn or honed finish. Sandstone is not available in a polished surface. Sandstone in a honed finish provides a smooth, non-reflective surface. Rougher surfaces are available with bush hammered or sandblasted sandstone.

Compared to slabs of sandstone , StonePly thin sandstone veneer offers lighter weight, greater strength (60 times stronger), secure mechanical fastening and easier detailing, install and support.

Sandstone used with StonePly, lightweight veneer cladding panels include:

Agra Red sandstone

Autumn Brown sandstone

Rainbow Sandstone

Teakwood Sandstone

Coffee Sandstone

Applications for StonePly sandstone veneer cladding include:

Curtain wall cladding

Stone spandrel panels

Store front

Elevator walls and floors

Signs

Interior and exterior walls

Most any design can be incorporated into your elevator floor plan. We will detail out the drawings for approval before fabrication. Simple elevator floors only require use of one type of stone while others require use of more than one type of stone. No matter what your flooring needs are, StonePly can supply it. Please contact us for more information.

StonePly stone panels offers two different joints that can be used where the outside corners ajoin.

The first and most common joint is a quirk miter joint. This joint is formed by two stone panels at an outside corner where the meeting edges are mitered and the edges are exposed and finished. The joint is then filled with backer rod and siliconed. Silicone color will depend on color of the stone. This option is the least expensive option because it does not need any pre-fabrication before arriving at the job site. Lightweight stone panels that feature quirk miter joints are easier to install.

The second type of joint is a finished corner. This joint is formed at an outside corner and pre-fabricated before arrival at the job site. After assembled, the edge is available mitered or with a radius This option is a little more costly because of the time it takes to fabricate the corners.

Please check out our CAD details for more information about quirk miter and finished joints.

What is the best backing option and installation method is best for my project??

StonePly Co. gets this question at least once a day. Depending on whether the project is interior or exterior will typically dictate what type of backing to use and the installation method needed.

Interior Use

If the stone panel project is interior, then StonePly stone panels on aluminum composite material backing (ACM) is ideal. This is the thinnest solution and will maximize your interior space. StonePly stone panels laminated to ACM backing is only 1/4″ thick which makes it ideal for interior use. StonePly ACM can be installed easily by a two man crew using the adhesive method. Structural silicone, such as Dow 795, adheres StonePly ACM stone panels to most wall substrates. It can even be used over most existing wall treatments.

Stone with ACM Backing

This doesn’t mean StonePly HoneyComb (HC) backing can’t be used for interior use. If StonePly stone panels are to be used as elevator cladding, StonePly HC would be used because it is non-combustable. StonePly HC Stone Panels can be attached to most substrates using any of the installation methods including: adhesion, z-clip, concealed screw, or interlocking channel.

Exterior Use

The most common solution for exterior use StonePly stone panels is StonePly HoneyComb (HC) because the HC backing has many more advantages over StonePly aluminum composite material (ACM) backing. StonePly HC acts as a radiant heat barrier. The stone deflects the heat from the sun and the honeycomb deflects heat or air from escaping from the building. The aluminum honeycomb acts like a thermos. It keeps the heat inside and deflects the cold.

Stone on Honeycomb Backing

There are several methods of installation for StonePly HC panels. For a detailed list of methods along with installation instructions please see StonePly’s installation page.

What are the benefits of using StonePly natural stone panels vs. full slab stone?

Lower Weight

StonePly natural stone panels only weigh about 3.5 pounds per square foot. StonePly thin stone panels weigh 80 percent less than thick stone panels making them superior to thick, heavy stone panels.

Higher Strength

StonePly stone panel cladding consists of a natural thin stone panel adhered with aviation epoxy to an aluminum substrate such as honeycomb or composite material. The rigidness of the aluminum substrate allows the stone face to be very thin but strong and durable at the same time.

Faster Installation

Because StonePly is a thin stone panel attached to a strong, but lightweight aluminum backing they are easier to install. In most cases, StonePly light weight stone panels install with minimal effort. Also, since the stone panel cladding system requires no mortar, installation can proceed in almost any type of weather.

Impact Resistant

With StonePly stone panel cladding, every square inch of stone is adhered to a rigid aluminium backing. This makes the stone face strong and impact resistant. StonePly stone panels have 60x the impact strength of a 1.5 inch thick stone panel. StonePly stone panels have been tested and proven to hold up in hurricanes, earth quakes, and tropical storms.

1. StonePly HC is an aluminum backing shaped like a honeycomb matrix. This is the strongest and most rigid backing StonePly offers. StonePly HC is perfect for exterior stone cladding panels. The Z Clip , plate and screw, or interlocking channel methods for installation make these honeycomb panels strong, lightweight, and easy to install. StonePly HC has an impact strength up to 60x greater than 1.5” stone. StonePly HC can be 3/4” – 1” thick. The thicker the StonePly HC backing that is used, the more flexural strength the panel will have.

A Technical Bulletin on Cleaning StonePly

StonePly stone panels should be protected during storage, setting, and after installation. StonePly should be stored on planks or pallets away from traffic and debris to prevent stains and breakages. If stored for a long period of time, the pallets should be covered with non-staining tarps. After installation, StonePly stone panels should be protected with a non-staining tarp or plastic during the remaining construction to avoid any unnecessary damages.

After construction, the stone cladding will need a final wash down to remove any debris or dirt. Acids and brick cleaners should not be used because they could etch or burn away at the stone’s finish. Dirt can be removed from most stones by washing with a mild detergent and water. If stains occur, it is important to recognize the cause of the stain. Any treatments to the stone panels face should be tested in a small inconspicuous area before cleaning the entire unit.

Metal fiber brushes shouldn’t be used when scrubbing stones because they may scar or scratch the stone face. Also, any metal residue left from the brush may later corrode or rust and cause staining. Power washing and/or sandblasting is not recommended because it may scratch or scar the face of the stone panels.

Attachment Methods for StonePly Thin Stone Panels

StonePly® stone panels have four basic attachment methods:

-Interlocking Channel
-Z Clip
-Plate and Screw
-Adhesive

In the interlocking channel installation method, an aluminum channel track is attached to the substrate with screws. Attached to the panels is also an aluminum channel. The panel channel interlocks with the channel attached to the substrate. This method is used mainly for panels attached to honeycomb backing.

Using the Z Clip method, an extruded aluminum track is attached to the substrate with screws. The panels have Z clips on the back face which slide down into the extruded aluminum track attached to the substrate. The panels are then inserted into the track. This method is used mainly for panels attached to honeycomb backing.

The third type of installation method is known as the plate and screw method. This method screws attach plates to the aluminum substrate. A backer rod and sealant at the joint will not only seal the joint, but also conceal the screws at the joint. This method is mainly used for honeycomb backing.

The adhesive installation method is used mainly for aluminum composite material (ACM) backing. With this method, structural silicone is used to attach the stone panel to the substrate.Who can install StonePly stone panel cladding? StonePly is fairly lightweight and easy to install. Carpenters, mills workers, glaziers, stone setters, and masons can handle installation.

StonePly® offers a lightweight, durable solution to heavy, thick stone panels. The thin stone panels adhered to honeycomb or aluminum composite material backing allows them to be stronger and lighter than a typical thick stone panel.Installation will be faster and easier because of the stone panels light weight design.Thin stone panels adhered to an aluminum backing weigh about 3.5 pounds per square foot.

Because of the ability of StonePly® to flex without breaking, is ideally suited for use in seismic zones. Unlike rigid stone panels, StonePly® can accept a considerable amount of bending forces and vibration without cracking or breaking.

StonePly®, unlike solid stone, stands up the large missile impact test. With an impact resistance that is up to 60x greater than 1.5″ granites, it holds up to flying debris and protects the building that it is cladding. This makes thin stone panels a great alternative to thick stone panels in areas prone to hurricanes and tropical storms.
