Natural stone building cladding from StonePly.

Selecting Stone for Cladding Panels: Technical Characteristics
Behind the incredible stone product created by StonePly are a significant number of technical characteristics that make up this versatile, durable, strong and beautiful material. Built to be lightweight while displaying characteristically beautiful natural stone, this fabricated stone wall panel system is made of a thin natural stone layer that is glued to an aluminum honeycomb substrate. Here, we reveal more about the technical characteristics to help you select stone for cladding panels.

Technical Characteristics of Cladding Panels
Depending where in the country or world you plan on installing the cladding panels, you should probably consider some of the technical characteristics to understand what type of benefit they really add to your construction or restoration project.

For example, in some parts of the country and world, structures can be hit with hurricanes, thunderstorms, high winds or tropical storms while other areas experience earthquakes from time to time. StonePly has undertaken rigorous lab testing on its cladding panels to determine what it can withstand.

The results are phenomenal. First, hurricane force winds are no match for this material. It has been able to stay intact in 200mph wind speeds as well as survive large missile impact at 50 feet per second when the same test shatters regular 1½” granite. The epoxy composite and adhesive technology used to bond the thin natural stone to the aluminum honeycomb substrate is the same used on aircraft that flies at mach speeds.

In terms of earthquakes, common stone cladding systems put too much strain on a building, causing greater risk for structural damage and an increase in the potential for accidents and even fatalities. Replacing that common stone cladding system after an earthquake can become very expensive. In contrast, the lightweight stone panel cladding system is resilient and has been found to withstand significant seismic activity.

When considering regular natural stone or StonePly cladding panels for your project, these technical characteristics clearly set StonePly apart as the material of choice. The technical characteristics listed online also provide further data on lab tests that illustrate the strength, durability, and fire retardant ability of this material.

Technical Knowledge Bank
Our online library of technical information also provides a wealth of detailed technical bulletins, which further illustrate how the technical characteristics offer further benefits in terms of low maintenance and minimal cleaning, the ease of chip and crack repairs, blast resistance, LEED certification, water and severe weather resistance and more.

Our technical information on installation also illustrates the ease at which you can work with our cladding panels, including a simple and effective installation system.

Get a Free Quote for Stone Panel Cladding
After considering these phenomenal technical characteristics, it is easy to see why StonePly should be your choice for your next cladding project. In addition to our extensive knowledge bank and team of experts, another incentive is that we provide free quotes for your stone panel cladding project. You can get your quote or additional information by calling 903.454.4630 or by filling out our contact form.

Thin sandstone veneer cladding from StonePly.

Sandstone faced StonePly veneer cladding is composed of an aluminum honeycomb base with a sandstone veneer permanently bonded to the face. Sandstone is a sedimentary stone, made up primarily of sand sized grains of minerals. The most common minerals in sandstone are quartz and feldspar. Sandstone veneer cladding panels are available in almost any color, the most common being red, brown, yellow, tan, pink, gray and white.

StonePly sandstone veneer cladding panels are generally used in a smooth sawn or honed finish. Sandstone is not available in a polished surface. Sandstone in a honed finish provides a smooth, non-reflective surface. Rougher surfaces are available with bush hammered or sandblasted sandstone.

Compared to slabs of sandstone , StonePly thin sandstone veneer offers lighter weight, greater strength (60 times stronger), secure mechanical fastening and easier detailing, install and support.

Sandstone used with StonePly, lightweight veneer cladding panels include:

Agra Red sandstone

Autumn Brown sandstone

Rainbow Sandstone

Teakwood Sandstone

Coffee Sandstone

Applications for StonePly sandstone veneer cladding include:

Curtain wall cladding

Stone spandrel panels

Store front

Elevator walls and floors

Signs

The University of California San Diego came to us with a unique problem. They wanted to match an existing building but did not want the complications of traditional stone settings. The building they were proposing was meant to be modular and they needed a cladding that could be removed and reattached easily.

StonePly’s solution was making a pre-panelized stone system that incorporated a “saw tooth” pattern to accommodate the unique joint pattern and avoid straight vertical lines. Kota Limestone was imported from India and shipped to StonePly’s plant in Greenville, Texas. StonePly was able to produce lightweight stone panels that were easy to install, incorporated interlocking ends, installed 6 times faster than traditional stone setting, and installation caused minimal interruption to the busy college campus.

For more information regarding this project please visit our website.

StonePly – Real Stone. Real Strong. Real Thin.

StonePly natural stone panels are thin stone panels laminated to an aluminum honeycomb backing using aviation epoxies. The process starts by laminating aluminum honeycomb sheets to both sides of a stone slab. Then we saw the slab in half producing two panels. The panels are then sanded down to the required thickness and then polished. Typically, StonePly Panels are 3/4″ thick (1/4″ stone and 1/2″ honeycomb).

StonePly stone panels are the perfect option for curtain walls. The stone panels are lightweight, weighing about the same as 3/8″ glass. These stone panels are thin and waterproof. The aluminum honeycomb backing provides them with a water tight seal and gives them the rigidity needed to work as a curtain wall system. StonePly stone panels are completely custom and can be made in any size panel needed and can accommodate any size order.

Compared to thick traditional stone panels, StonePly can reduce dead load on curtain wall system because it only weighs 3.5 lbs per square foot. StonePly has been tested in wind speeds of more than 300 mph. It has been formulated to withstand impact caused by hurricanes and flying debris. In a large missile impact test, a 2×4 merely bounces off a StonePly panel. The same test shatters a 1.5″ thick traditional stone panel. The use of aviation approved honeycomb and epoxies bond a thin layer of stone over every square inch so the stone panel does not shatter. Earthquakes are no match for StonePly because StonePly’s stone panels are rigid but flexible enough to move as the building moves.

Worried about installation? We can help. StonePly can provide you with installation drawings during the shop drawing process at an added fee. No project is too small or too large for StonePly. Please contact us.

StonePly lightweight stone panels can contribute to a LEED Certificate. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is a program that defines the standards to having a “green” building. LEED is recognized nationally and was developed to promote use of green products during production. In fact, 26% of all LEED buildings are government owned or occupied.

There are several reasons to go green:

Several government incentives

Get recognized by your community as a participant in the LEED program

Marketing through the LEED website

Satisfaction of helping the environment

There are many credits and categories a building must qualify for to receive a LEED certificate. A committee decides whether or not you can receive this certificate. Generally speaking, you must receive 26 out of 69 credits to receive the lowest LEED certificate. The certificates are (in order from lowest to highest achievement): certified, silver, gold, and platinum.

StonePly contributes to the Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Air Quality, and Innovation and Design categories. For more information on how StonePly stone panels contributes to these many categories please visit our website. On our website you will find exactly what credits StonePly qualifies for and exactly how they will help you obtain a LEED certificate.
